The Department of Mining Engineering at the College of Petroleum and Mining Engineering, Sudan University of Science and Technology, was established as an extension of the academic development and curricular expansion of the college's extractive disciplines. The college transitioned from its former name, the "College of Petroleum Engineering and Technology," to its current title to reflect the comprehensive inclusion of both petroleum and mining engineering. The establishment of this department came in response to the steady growth of the mining sector in Sudan and the pressing need to supply this vital industry with qualified engineering personnel capable of managing and exploiting national mineral resources using advanced scientific and economic methods. 

The department's mission focuses on preparing competent engineers and consultants who keep pace with technological advancements and modern requirements in the fields of mineral exploration, mining, and processing. The academic curriculum aims to equip students with the scientific expertise and advanced practical skills necessary to meet the actual needs of the labor market and mining companies, while emphasizing occupational safety, environmental resource management, and economic feasibility studies for mining projects.

The department offers an integrated academic program awarding a Bachelor of Science (Honors) degree in Mining Engineering under the credit-hour system over a five-year academic period (10 semesters). Additionally, the faculty members actively contribute to providing technical consulting and academic supervision for specialized Master’s and Ph.D. programs in mining and exploration within the college.

The curriculum covers integrated engineering and technical domains to ensure that graduates are well prepared for all stages of mining operations. Courses include surface and underground mine design and execution methods, drilling and blasting techniques, rock mechanics, as well as mineral processing and beneficiation. Students also study supporting disciplines such as mining geology, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), mine ventilation, and safety and environmental engineering. This academic foundation culminates in a mandatory intensive practical field training at company sites and mines, finalized by the submission of an applied graduation project that addresses real-world field engineering challenges.
