The Department of Petroleum Exploration Engineering at the College of Petroleum Engineering and Technology, Sudan University of Science and Technology, is one of the specialized departments that aims to prepare engineers equipped with the necessary technical and applied skills to conduct advanced geological and geophysical operations, explore oil and gas reservoirs, and evaluate formations through the proposal and programs.

The department offers two distinguished undergraduate programs: a Bachelor of Science (Honors) in Petroleum Exploration Engineering and a Bachelor of Technology in Petroleum Exploration Engineering, alongside its technical oversight of diploma programs and its core contribution to managing specialized Master's and Ph.D. programs.

The academic structure and curriculum content of the department are integrated over study years during which students take a comprehensive and complementary set of basic science and engineering courses, alongside specialized petroleum exploration sciences and supporting skills.

At the level of specialized geological, geophysical, and exploration sciences, the program focuses on teaching general geology with an emphasis on the geology of Sudan, crystallography and mineralogy, petroleum geology, sedimentology and petrography, structural geology, and the principles of rock mechanics. The curriculum also covers wave and radiation physics, electromagnetic fields, and specialized geophysical exploration methods such as gravity, magnetic, and seismic exploration methods.

This curricular diversity aims to equip graduates with the ability to understand and evaluate depositional environments and petroleum trap systems, utilize geophysical data to identify promising reservoirs, perform lithological and structural analyses to ensure safe exploration and drilling operations, and apply programming and engineering concepts to efficiently solve technical field problems.
