The Department of Transportation and Refining Engineering at Sudan University of Science and Technology was established as an extension of the historical academic development of petroleum disciplines within the college. This journey began with the founding of the Department of Petroleum Engineering in 1991 as the first specialized department of its kind in Sudan. With the expansion of the oil industry and the growing need for specialized fields in processing operations and logistics, the department was elevated in 2004 within the structure of the "College of Petroleum Engineering and Technology" (currently known as the College of Petroleum and Mining Engineering), becoming a foundational pillar for qualifying technical talent in engineering, transportation, and refining.
The department's mission centers on preparing distinguished engineers and technologists who keep pace with rapid technological advancements in the fields of oil and natural gas transportation and refining. The academic curriculum aims to meet the actual requirements of the labor market and the petroleum industry, emphasizing applied skills, laboratory experimentation, and field experience.
The department offers two distinguished undergraduate programs: a Bachelor of Science (Honors) in Oil Transportation and Refining Engineering, and a Bachelor of Technology in Oil Transportation and Refining Engineering. This is in addition to providing technical oversight for diploma programs and contributing significantly to the management of specialized Master's and Doctoral degree programs.
The curriculum spans multiple engineering and technical domains to ensure comprehensive knowledge for graduates. It encompasses oil and gas transportation and storage technologies, pipeline networks, refining operations, petrochemicals, reaction kinetics, and natural gas processing engineering. The program also covers supporting engineering sciences such as thermodynamics, heat and mass transfer, process control and simulation, safety, and environmental engineering. This academic preparation culminates in the requirement for students to complete intensive field training at petroleum sites and refineries, alongside an applied graduation project addressing real-world engineering challenges.
