The Department of Architecture was established in 1970 and began its work in Port Sudan under the name of the Institute of Technicians for Civil Engineering and Architecture. The department later moved to the national capital under the same name. In 1975, a group of technical institutes were consolidated under the umbrella of the Institute of Technological Colleges, where the Department of Architecture became part of the College of Engineering and Scientific Studies. At that time, it comprised two divisions: a division for buildings and a division for architecture. In 1990, the Institute of Technological Colleges was transformed into the Sudan University of Science and Technology, which includes several colleges, among them the College of Engineering, of which the Department of Architecture is one. The Bachelor of Architecture program was introduced in 1995, and the first class of Bachelor of Architecture graduates completed their studies in 2001. Currently, the Department of Architecture offers a Bachelor of Architecture (Honours) degree and implements a Master of Architecture program in Architectural Design, Building Services, and Urban Design under the umbrella of the College of Graduate Studies and Scientific Research. It also offers two technical diploma programs in Architecture and Buildings in coordination with the College of Technology. As part of the University of Sudan for Science and Technology's efforts to enhance academic performance and keep pace with rapid developments in various fields, the idea arose to divide the College of Engineering into schools and transform the Department of Architecture into an independent college. This was intended to meet market demand and create a diversity of specializations in light of the significant urban and technological development the country has witnessed in recent years. The proposal was approved by the esteemed Council of Professors in its session No. (99-1/2011) on February 10, 2011. In 2014, new programs were added and approved: the Urban Planning program, which awards a Bachelor of Architecture (Honours) degree (specializing in Urban Planning), and the Architectural Technology program, which awards a Bachelor of Architecture (Honours) degree (specializing in Architectural Technology). The first cohort of students in these programs will be admitted in the 2014-2015 academic year. The Bachelor of Architecture (Honours) program will be implemented in coordination with the Bachelor of Technology Department.
