African School for Inclusive Digital Industries Program 2026

#Sudan_University Continues Its African Success Story: Outstanding Student Participation and First Place in a Digital Industries Program in Rwanda
Five students from Sudan University of Science and Technology have concluded their participation in the "African School on Inclusive Digital Industries 2026" program. Held in Kigali, Rwanda, from September 10 to 16, 2026, the event brought together students from various African nations.
Representing the university were Thuwaiba Mohamed (Electronic Engineering), Moaz Al-Tayeb (Mechanical Engineering), Hibatullah Othman Saleh Ibrahim (Computer Science), Ali Daqarshawi Ali Mohamed (Petroleum Engineering), and Waad Yasser Mohamed Hamid (Mining Engineering).
The university’s participation was crowned with success when a team—including student Thuwaiba Mohamed alongside peers from Morocco, South Africa, Ghana, and Kenya—secured first place in the group project competition. Their winning project utilized artificial intelligence to detect and deter birds using audio and visual data, thereby protecting agricultural crops. The project integrates computer vision and acoustic sensing technologies to develop a low-cost system tailored for small-scale African farms.
The program was organized by the African School on Materials (AfriSMAT) in collaboration with the African Engineering and Technology Network (AFRETEC) and hosted by the Centre of Excellence in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Rwanda. It featured a range of activities and practical workshops covering artificial intelligence, machine learning, digital manufacturing, robotics, and the Internet of Things (IoT). Sudan University of Science and Technology is participating in this African program for the second consecutive year. This follows the achievement of a team—which included one of the university's students—in securing second place in the 2025 edition; this year, the university advanced to first place. This success reflects the students' ability to compete, work within multidisciplinary international teams, and leverage modern technologies to provide solutions to challenges facing African communities.
This participation underscores the university's commitment to enhancing its students' presence in regional and international scientific forums, providing them with opportunities to develop skills in innovation, research, and teamwork, and enabling them to represent Sudan in African scientific and technical initiatives.
